Irish Agricultural Museum & Johnstown Castle Gardens
With one of the most comprehensive displays of farming and rural life in the country, the Irish Agricultural Museum and Johnstown Castle Gardens make a wonderful day out for all the family – whatever the weather. The beautifully maintained ornamental gardens surrounding the castle extend to 40 hectares and feature three lakes, a walled garden and a resident family of peacocks.
Dogs welcome in all public areas except the tearooms
The Irish Agricultural Museum: Housed in the former estate farm buildings the museum offers lots to see, learn, do and enjoy for all ages:
• Admire the large collection of beautifully restored tractors, carts, ploughs, threshing machines, stationary engines and dairy equipment • See recreated workshops of traditional trades including blacksmith, cooper and wheelwright • Learn about ‘The Great Famine’ through an exhibition which vividly reveals what life was like before, during and after the famine • Discover the chequered history of Johnstown Castle and its estate • Enjoy the largest display of Irish country furniture • Compare farmhouse kitchens through the ages • Take part in the ‘Red Tractor’ explorer quiz (suitable for children)
Johnstown Castle Gardens: The spectacular ornamental grounds and gardens surrounding the 19th-century castle were designed by Daniel Robertson who is famed for the gardens at Powerscourt in Co. Wicklow.
• Stroll through the grounds with over 200 varieties of trees and shrubs • Relax by the castle lakeside with its Gothic towers, waterfalls and statues • Enjoy a picnic in the sunken Italian garden or museum courtyard • Take a guided trip around the grounds by horse and carriage (seasonal) • Watch the peacocks strut by and display their finery • View the ruins of Rathlannon Castle
The castle and grounds are maintained by Teagasc (Agriculture and Food Authority). Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome (bins are provided).
The Peacock Tearoom and Museum Shop: The Peacock Tearoom and Museum Shop are located near the entrance to the museum. The tearoom serves delicious refreshments from Easter to the end of October. The shop is open year-round and sells a range of souvenirs, gifts and books. Dogs are not allowed in the tearooms but are welcome in the outdoor seating area. Dog bows are also available here for thirsty pooches.
