Grizedale Forest Park and Visitor Centre

Image

Cafe and Visitor Centre is open 10am - 4pm daily, but the forest and car park is always open!

The forest has 10 different walking trails of varying difficulties and lenghths, the longest walking trail is 10 miles and there are trails for cycling too, if Bikejor or Canicross are your thing, this is also a great place. On the website you can see a PDF map of the trails, and this can also be accessed via the Forest Xplorer free app.

You have to pay on exit at the main car park, although you can do this with a card - but there are other car parks, which are free around the edge of the forest.

Dogs are allowed in the Visitor Centre but need to sit outside if you wish to visit the cafe.

There's always a themed trail for children - The Gruffalo was one of them, you can find out their most up to date one on the website and there's a massive adventure playground too, dogs can't play on the playground, but can sit with their humans at the picnic benches around the edge so it's a good family day out for dogs and children. Some of the trails are suitable for pushchairs and there is a wheelchair accessible trail too.

if you have a reactive dog, the Visitor Centre can be quite busy, but peace and quiet can be found out on the trails and it's easy to park in one of the other car parks, bring a picnic and spend a day walking without seeing too many people and dogs. It's also possible to avoid the waymarked trails and navigate your own routes using an OS Map if that's what you enjoy.

A good choice of walks for all abilities (from 45 minutes to 3 hours). Dogs are not allowed in the visitors centre or shop, but are allowed in the cafe.

Cafe most definitely worth a visit, cake was excellent and reasonably priced.

Lovely walks in beautiful scenery, definitely one of our favourite places to explore!

So many lovely walks and trails of all lengths and difficulties to explore and many free car parks around the perimeter. In such a sheep-rich environment it's nice to be able to stroll on forest trails and safely give dogs off-lead time, if that's what they enjoy. It's often quite busy on the shorter trails or around the visitor centre, so we usually park nearer the edge of the forest and walk the quieter sections - one of our dogs is reactive and really prefers this. If you're not confident with a map, follow one of the waymarked trails, and people with younger children might want to check out the visitor centre with it's fantastic adventure playground and children's trails - such as the Gruffalo Trail.
