Giant's Causeway

Around 40,000 interlocking basalt columns meet the Atlantic Ocean at this UNESCO World Heritage Site, making this one of Northern Ireland's most spectacular places to explore with your dog.

Our chosen walk follows the Blue Trail from the Visitor Centre towards the famous stones, with dramatic cliffs on one side and the North Atlantic on the other. The official trail is 0.8 miles each way and takes around 25 minutes in each direction, so we'd allow approximately an hour for the return walk, plus plenty of extra time to explore the stones and take in the views. The path is steep in places and the stones can become slippery when wet.

Dogs are very welcome at Giant's Causeway but need to be kept on a lead. They're even welcome inside the Visitor Centre and its café, where you'll also find water bowls at the front and rear entrances.

If you're driving, you can park at the Causeway Hotel next to the Visitor Centre. When our Ambassadog visited, parking cost £10 per car, which was returned as a £10 voucher to spend at the hotel. The hotel restaurant itself wasn't dog friendly, but they were able to pick up coffee and treats to take away. As parking arrangements and prices can change, we'd recommend checking before you travel.
