Antonine Wall: Rough Castle

Image

Whilst not as famous as its Southern counterpart, the Antonine wall was one of the largest projects undertaken by Romans in Scotland. Constructed in around 142 AD, it stretched from Old Kilpatrick on the west coast to near Bo’ness in the east, the Antonine Wall was around 37 miles (60km) long.If you can only visit one Antonine Wall location, make it Rough Castle. This site features the best-preserved fort, with defences and an annexe, as well as the tallest surviving portion of Antonine Wall Rampart, excellent Ditch profiles, and the only known example of lilia defensive pits.Dogs are permitted, on lead, throughout the site.

There is not much left to the wall (mostly ditches and some foundations) but it makes an excellent walk when visiting the Falkirk Wheel if you want something more interesting than the canal.
