Crichton Castle
With its diamond-faceted façade, there’s nothing else quite like this castle in Scotland. Overlooking the river Tyne, this 14th-century tower house is one of the oldest in Scotland. Remarkably intact, dogs are permitted, on lead, throughout the property whilst you discover about James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell and third husband of Mary Queen of Scots.Afterwards, enjoy a stroll through the meadow to the riverside walk and take in the local wild flowers and stunning scenery.

This castle is tucked out the way and a bit difficult to find, but is definitely worth the effort. After admiring the unique architecture, there is a lovely walk through a meadow and small woodland to stretch legs.
