Fort George

Image

Fort George is the mightiest artillery fortification in Britain. Following the 1746 defeat at Culloden of Bonnie Prince Charlie, George II created the ultimate defence against further Jacobite unrest. The result, Fort George, is the mightiest artillery fortification in Britain, if not Europe. Its garrison buildings, artillery defences bristling with cannon, and superb collection of arms - including bayoneted muskets, pikes, swords and ammunition pouches - provide a fascinating insight into 18th century military life. Dogs are not allowed inside any of the buildings and exhibitions but there are lots of outdoor things to see and do at Fort George including a walk around the ramparts from which you can see dolphins in the Moray Firth, if you are lucky. You can also see the dog cemetery where the officers dogs are buried. There are few picnic tables if you wish to take your own food and there is also a café.

Both audio tour and kids quiz are well worth getting to ensure you see everything, however, if you want to see the pet cemetery, you must go on one of the tours.
