Dryburgh Abbey

Image

Located by the River Tweed, this medieval ruin offers a glimpse of of monastic life.Admire the ancient trees as you wonder about the ruin that has seen three fires and four attacks. Also home to the burial places of Sir Walter Scott and Field-Marshal Earl Haig (north transept) and the Earl of Buchan (sacristy), there is plenty to see.Ask the friendly staff for a copy of the kids quiz, it’s a perfect way to make sure you capture all that Dryburgh has to offer – and if you get all the answers right, you’ll even get a sticker!Dogs are permitted throughout the site. Seasonal opening hours are in operation, so it is advised to check the website for last entry. If you have time, why not pair this abbey with the nearby and equally dog friendly Jedburgh Abbey, a 20 minute car drive away?

We paired this with Jedburgh Abbey, and this sprawling ruin was certainly the one Missy preferred most. Home to some of the oldest trees in the uk (the yew was planted in 1138!) the wooded grounds make for a lovely stroll.

I would definitely recommend getting the kids quiz to make sure you find all the abbey has to offer.
