Chee Dale Stepping Stones

Chee Dale is one of the Peak District's more unusual dog walks, following the River Wye through a steep-sided limestone gorge and across the famous Chee Dale stepping stones.

We've picked out a circular route starting at Miller's Dale car park, heading through Chee Dale to the stepping stones before joining the Monsal Trail for the return journey. The Monsal Trail section is flat and easy to follow, while the section through Chee Dale is more challenging, with uneven limestone, muddy paths and a steep, rocky descent as you approach the stepping stones. The limestone can become particularly slippery when wet, so we recommend sturdy footwear.

There are some steep drops beside the path, particularly around the descent towards the stepping stones, so dogs should be kept under close control here. The route also runs alongside the River Wye, where the current can be strong, so take extra care with dogs around the water.

The Monsal Trail is shared with cyclists and horse riders, which is worth bearing in mind if your dog is nervous or reactive around either. Our Ambassadog didn't encounter any livestock when completing the route, although we'd always recommend remaining aware of your surroundings in the countryside.

Miller's Dale has a pay and display car park, café and public toilets, making it a useful place to start and finish the walk. Dog waste bins are available here too, but our Ambassadog didn't spot any others along the route, so we'd recommend disposing of waste before setting off where possible.
