Wollaton Park

Wollaton Park offers a dog walk with a difference. More than 500 acres of historic parkland surround the impressive Wollaton Hall, with open grassland, woodland and a lake to explore - but it's the park's free-roaming red and fallow deer that make a walk here particularly memorable.

We've picked out a roughly four-mile circular route through the park, giving you a good introduction to Wollaton without turning the visit into a full-day hike. The route takes you through a mixture of open parkland and woodland, around the lake and past Wollaton Hall, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy views across the estate along the way.

The deer are one of Wollaton's biggest attractions, but they also mean you'll need to take extra care when visiting with your dog. Deer roam freely throughout the park, so dogs should be kept under close control and on a lead around them. Give the deer plenty of space and never allow your dog to chase or approach them, even if your dog would usually be reliable off lead.

Away from the deer, this is a relatively straightforward walk. Much of the route follows easy paths through the park, although conditions can become muddy after wet weather. The lake also means there is open water along the route, so bear this in mind if you have a particularly enthusiastic swimmer.

There are facilities within the park, including places to stop for refreshments and public toilets, and parking is available for visitors. With plenty of other paths crossing the estate, it's also easy to shorten your walk or spend longer exploring if you don't want to follow the full circular route.
