Peasholm Park
Peasholm Park, a uniquely beautiful oriental-themed municipal park, is situated in the coastal town of Scarborough in North Yorkshire, England. Opened in 1912, the park quickly became a popular venue for galas, displays, and exhibitions. In 1924, the park was expanded to include Peasholm Glen, a serene natural ravine. Accessible to all throughout the entire year, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, entrance to the park is always free.
Visitors, including well-behaved dogs on leads, are welcome to the park. The responsibility of disposing of dog waste is facilitated by the numerous litter bins scattered throughout the park.
A tranquil lake is one of the central features of Peasholm Park. In the summer months, visitors can hire various types of boats, such as traditional rowing boats, canoes, and even dragon-headed pedaloes. The latter is a particular favorite among locals and tourists. Those who prefer a more relaxing experience can sail on the Swan launch, enjoying the serenity of the lake. With a bandstand located in the middle of the lake, free music concerts often provide a delightful auditory experience during the summer season. Cafés offer refreshments, meals, and ice cream, or visitors can choose to bring their own picnic. Abundant seating areas allow everyone to find a perfect spot to relax by the lake, sipping coffee and listening to soothing music.
The park's island in the lake, accessible via a bridge, provides a path for exploration, leading to an impressive pagoda at the top. The oriental theme resonates throughout the park's pathways, evident in the design of bridges and layouts.
Designed within a natural glen, Peasholm Park incorporates a stream that culminates in the lake. As one walks up the glen, various paths present themselves, allowing visitors to follow the stream with its gentle waterfalls and ponds, often used for sailing model boats. Even during the bustling summer season, the glen remains peaceful, providing an ideal place to stroll or sit and appreciate the surrounding natural beauty. Oriental influence is seen in many areas of the park, along with a collection of rare and unusual trees and flowers, both wild and cultivated.
At the top of the glen, a lily pond is set within a beautiful garden area. The park maintains its natural simplicity, even with the addition of tourist attractions, making it an attractive habitat for wildlife such as wild geese, swans, ducks, and squirrels. Over time, some original trees that have died have been artistically transformed into carved figures like squirrels and dragons, adding to the enchanting atmosphere of Peasholm Park.
This historic park, open to everyone and enriched with natural and man-made features, continues to be a key highlight of the North Bay experience in Scarborough. It invites visitors to immerse themselves in its oriental charm and tranquil beauty. Whether it's boating, enjoying music, or simply soaking in the surroundings, Peasholm Park offers something for everyone.
