Inchcolm Abbey

Image

Inchcolm Island is by far the most beautiful of all of the islands in the Firth of Forth. The Island is cared for by Historic Scotland and is commonly referred to as the 'Iona of the East' due to it's similarity to the Island of Iona on the west coast of Scotland. Inchcolm Abbey dates back to the 12th Century, being founded by King David I, after his brother King Alexander I was forced to seek shelter there during a very stormy crossing of the Forth in 1123. The Abbey remains as the best preserved group of monastic buildings in Scotland.Book and enjoy a boat ride to the island, keeping an eye out for seals. Once on the island, explore the Abbey and the wartime fortifications. Well behaved dogs are permitted on the boat and throughout the property and mus be on a lead at all times.

A great day out. If the Abbey isn't your thing then there is also a nice walk around the island.

I'd recommend being well organised as it can be difficult to book the boat during peak seasons.
