St Ninians Beach (St Ninian's Isle)
The beach here is a long spit of fine sand connecting the small isle of St Ninian’s to Shetland. Made up largely of shell sand, the symmetrical curve sandbar can be seen from high ground, such as the Ward of Scousburgh.
This kind of sand causeway is officially known as a tombolo, although the Scottish word is ayre. Whatever you call it this is certainly one of the most picturesque beaches on the islands with a good range of facilities

We visited several times on our Shetland trip and it's gorgeous - lovely walking on the beach and if you have a sea kayak it's great for that too - however, if you want to walk around St Ninian's isle - the bit linked by this tombolo - just be aware that sheep graze there, so that would most likely be an on-lead walk. If you walk back up to the track to the village store there are some toilets, should you need them (and you can buy some really lovely locally made cards too).
