Sugar Loaf

The easiest route is from the main car park which is approached by a narrow road from the Vineyard. Exercise care as there are some fairly long stretches without passing places. The view of the Usk Valley from the car park is stunning and a good place to bring visitors who can’t walk very far. The walk from there is easy at first and finishes with a steep climb to reach the summit. ALTERNATIVE: - You can also do the : Sugar Loaf circuit

  • Wander through a deep wooded valley and out onto open moorland, climb the iconic Sugar Loaf Mountain and take in wonderful views of the surrounding countryside, stretching across to the Severn Estuary and the Brecon Beacons.
  • 3 hours 30 mins - 5 hours
  • Distance - 4 miles (6.4 km)

Good to know: - Sugar Loaf, sometimes called The Sugar Loaf, is a mountain situated 2 miles north-west of Abergavenny in Monmouthshire, Wales. It is the southernmost of the summit peaks of the Black Mountains, with a height of 1,955 feet.

Explorer note : - Worth the trek.

  • Gorgeous scenery, beautiful landscape.
  • Quite an easy walk until you get to the bottom of the peak.
  • Very rocky climb certainly not suitable for people with mobility issues.
  • The wind at the top is unbelievable but the view is outstanding.
  • Give it a go.

The drive to the car park is a narrow path but there is plenty of parking once you get there. Theres a number of routes to get to the top so you can pick a climb that suits you’re ability. The very top itself is quite steep and rocky so good footwear is a must
