Rhossili Bay is one of those places that makes you stop and take in the view. Three miles of golden sand stretch along the Gower Peninsula, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and countryside, with Worm's Head extending out into the sea at the western end of the bay.

We've picked out a roughly four-mile circular route that takes you up onto Rhossili Down, where a little extra effort rewards you with incredible views across the bay and towards Worm's Head, before descending back towards the coast. You can also opt for a simpler out-and-back walk along Rhossili Beach if you'd prefer something shorter.

Dogs are welcome on Rhossili Bay all year round with no seasonal restrictions. However, this is very much an open countryside and coastal walk, so you'll need to manage your dog carefully. Livestock and wildlife can be encountered, there are steep cliff edges in places and dogs should be kept securely on a lead wherever signage requires it.

The terrain varies depending on the section of the walk. Expect uneven paths, steep sections, steps and potentially muddy ground after wet weather. The beach itself is much more open and straightforward, although getting down to it involves a steeper section. Rhossili is also very exposed, so we recommend checking the weather before setting off - strong winds can make a big difference on the headland, particularly for older, smaller or nervous dogs.

If you're visiting during summer, keep an eye out for the famous Rhossili Sunflowers too. Around eight acres of sunflowers are grown near Worm's Head, usually blooming from around mid-July, creating an incredible splash of colour against the backdrop of Rhossili Bay. The sunflower fields are a seasonal attraction with trails, photo spots and pick-your-own flowers, so they're well worth adding to your visit if they're open.

There are several dog friendly places to stop in Rhossili. The View Rhossili Kitchen, Cafe and Bar is directly opposite the National Trust car park and particularly welcoming to dogs, with treats, water bowls and even a dog menu. The Lookout is another dog friendly option for coffee, cakes, sandwiches, ice cream and snacks, while Helvetia at the Worm's Head Hotel offers pub-style food and drinks in the village.

We recommend giving yourself time to explore some of the paths above the bay rather than heading straight down to the beach and back. The views change constantly, and some of the best are looking back across Rhossili Bay from higher ground.

Parking in the National Trust car park, free to members and can get very busy, the walk down to the beach is quite steep. But it is well worth it. The long beach has lots of space so did not feel crowded, Kobe had great fun wandering towards the waves and then running away from them again. Dog friendly all year round. The walk along to view Worms Head is also worth doing, be careful of the livestock. There is a sunflower field in the summer months. Toilets can be very very busy and not many dog bins so be prepared. One of the nicest beaches in the UK, and a great spot to watch some surfers.
