Bamse's Memorial Trail - Montrose

Follow the trail of Bamse, the huge St. Bernard dog who lived during the 2nd World War. Bamse was owned by Captain Hafto of the Norwegian Navy, and went to sea with him on the minesweeper Thorodd during the war. He achieved legendary status in Montrose, Scotland, where the Thorodd was stationed, as tales of his adventures, courage and kindness spread.

If you’re visiting Montrose with your dog, Bamse’s Memorial Trail is a lovely walk that’s full of local history and perfect for dog lovers. The trail follows the story of Bamse, the heroic St. Bernard who became a much-loved member of the Royal Norwegian Navy during the Second World War. Starting at his bronze statue on the harbour, the route takes you through parts of Montrose before finishing at his peaceful resting place beside the River South Esk. It’s an easy walk with plenty of places to stop, read about Bamse’s incredible life and enjoy the harbour views. Even if you don’t usually enjoy history, Bamse’s story is one that’s hard not to fall in love with.
